What do you Want in 2018?

How is your new year going so far?

I hope it’s amazing!

I need your help and wanted to get your feedback on some things.

I’m planning out 2018 and wanted to know what you think I need to do to serve you and the pigeon racing community better?

Do you want more content?

If so, is there any specific topics you are interested in?

I have also been thinking of how to get young flyers involved in the sport.

Do you have any ideas for that?

Do you think a mobile “pigeon racing” game would be a cool idea?

Do you think we should focus more on building a member directory and putting clubs together?

So when you get a minute please feel free to let me know your thoughts on what you would like me to focus on this year. You can post your comments in the comment section below

This is an open forum and I will read every comment so please feel free to express yourself and I look forward to bringing you more value in 2018!

Thanks again for your participation and I look forward to reading your comments.

Yours in the sport,
-Chris

I would like to see the sport get more exposure to attract new members. I want to know ideas from others what they do to get members. Our club is small and when we get someone interested the cost to get involved turns them away. Been in this sport since 1958 and seen the club go from 100+ members to a hand full.

All the topics that the world of pigeon fancy covers me, every day you learn something new. I would like that in these mometos you will help me with this, GEM FLIGHT FUEL or Vydex Jet Stream, my question is what dose should I give per liter of water or kg of water? jet stream food because I think it is much recommended by the manufacturer, 20 grams per liter, here the feed is not of much quality in terms of variety of grains and the maximum distance our pigeons compete is 430 miles, we basketed Saturday for drop Sunday, which day I must give example Thursday and Friday, which of the 2 products is better suited to our conditions to your understanding, greetings

Genetics especially how the cock passes on certain characteristics, such as colour, whereas the hen passes on certain characteristics such as size ? etc etc.

Advice on different racing systems, in different parts of the world. For example in Malta we race from November until May, in Australia they have two different seasons according to the geographical area. In Florida they race at a similar time, I think, but mostly in the UK and continent they race April – September. So maybe darkness doesn’t apply to Malta, Florida ?

Different loft designs for different parts of the world, i.e. high humidity areas, very hot areas, etc

Good Chris I would like to contribute, I think that the base of pigeon sports are children since every day it becomes more difficult to buy a pigeon of good lineage, that is why we must make fairs where we can invite the children and give them a pair of pigeons , there are many pigeons who would be willing, also go to schools and educate our children about these beautiful birds and also make a book for the little ones where we illustrate each stage of the carrier pigeon and its journey home.

I have been considering getting into the sport. A real issue is the lack of definitive specifications of legal loft size for the standard suburban back yard. It seems that a maximum of 10 square meters is about the council standard in Brisbane Australia. Perhaps a high quality blueprint of a standard 4.5M @ 2.5 M with height of 1.9 M, complete with easy to clean floor options, breeding and racing sections outlined, air controls etc would assist newcomers. Perhaps a Kit form of the infrastructure could be made available by a shed manufacturer and publicised on forums etc. A more complete fact sheet of standard answers for reluctant neighbours, like that provided on pigeon hygeine facts for councils provided by Dr Col Walker from Melbourne, but much much more diverse, but just as evidence based would be invaluable.

    Hi Chris
my son and I live in Vanderbijlpark South Africa and participate in a club with some 30 members. I think the major issue these days is pigeon nitrution and the e-book of Willem Mulder on the internet is a valuable aid for fanciers on the subject.
Conceraning the youngsters we all know how compurt games facinate them – perhaps some knowledgeble fancier coul come forward witk a game on pigeon racing and relateble aspects.
Pigeon physiology is another interesting subject and perhaps some expert could devise a short introduction for the science class instead of using frogs it could focus on thr pige on because there will be abundant birds available for lab use.
For the fanciers we should start updating our subject for discussion and dream up new subjects for publication, issues never before contemplated?

Well that are just a few thoughts to think about. REGARDS
    JOGGIE AND NIEKIE PETERS

I think it would be very beneficial for members if more natural products where mentioned, not just someone’s idea’s, but proven uses, plus methods, tips and reasons from the average little backyard flier, one can read all they want on line about the top fliers, I think it’s more the little backyard lofts that are more interesting to hear about.

As for kids getting in, or any age group to enter our sport, to make it work, one needs to reach the person who don’t know they are looking for something new, a good way is using pigeons as a school project, get them to learn how they were used in earlier years, involve the parents in school releases, this is who we need to reach, the parents.
I don’t swallow the idea kids aren’t into pigeons is because of the electronics, that’s a cop out on our side as fanciers, it’s our fault for being so secretive about our sport for allot of years, go anywhere and ask the average person on the street if they know about racing pigeons, I think you already know the answer.

I think if you want a pigeon game to catch on, it will have to involve pigeons used in a spy game to send messages to concore, of course you need to throw a bit of violence into it, say hunters or snipers, any game can be good and catch on, just need the right ingredients in the mixture.

Here is some food for thought, start a club directory where clubs in different countries, states, provinces or cities can become sister clubs, supporting each other in ways to help them grow, in membership or finances by supporting new idea’s, one way could be by sending club birds back to each sister club, each member sends 2-3 birds to a different clubs members, call it a small futurity race, a small wager into the kitty and in the end, new blood is passed around at a minimal cost to everyone, and the fun of watching someone else’s management with your pigeons, without the high cost of fee’s like a derby would charge.
I could go on, but don’t want to bore you.
For all they are worth, these are some of my ideals.

I think the sport can only get better if there is a main focus on promoting our sport to the full. Trips to Schools and showing our birds to the younger generation can be a very good way to promote our sport. It would be good to let some of the school children release the birds while on the visit. I feel at times people are put off from our sport because of the cost not only to buy birds but also their upkeep. I try to help new members to our sport, by breeding youngsters for them or giving the a couple of older birds to breed from at no cost. I think what we need to do is help other members in the way of Nutrition, and making them understand that our sport is a 365 day sport, so the birds health is paramount. At present we are getting ready for a new racing season, i feel there are to many feds all racing back to the same area but at different liberation times.I think it would be much better having just having 1 combine race, so the birds are put up together if they are flying back to the same area. We need to focus on moving the sport forward, and educating some to become better at our sport so they enjoy the sport a lot more, and not feel they are getting left behind.
